It's no secret that self-care has been proven to reduce anxiety, depression, and stress. It can improve concentration, minimize frustration and anger, increase happiness, and so much more!

Unfortunately, self-care is typically related to shame. Too often we disregard our own needs for the sake of others. We tell ourselves that it's selfish, that we're not worth it, and a myriad of other ridiculous reasons. I say "ridiculous" because if you go back and read the first paragraph again you'll probably think, "I want that!" And why shouldn't you have it?

I like to think of self-care like the little oxygen bags that drop down from the ceiling of airplanes. What does the flight attendant always say? "Put your mask on before assisting others" Read that again! Now if we apply that to our everyday lives it looks a little different, but the concept is still the same. We have to first take care of ourselves before we can take care of others. Another good analogy is, "You can't pour from an empty cup!"

Continuing a good self-care routine during the winter is even more important. Typically the cold weather and the dark tend to make us a little bluer than in the summertime.

Here are 5 Self-care Ideas for Winter:

  • Hydrating skincare for dry skin - Don't skip the lips!

I'm a total skincare junkie, so of course, this had to be my first idea. During the winter months, no matter where you live, typically it's cooler which dries out your skin. Using skincare that has a little extra dose of ingredients like hyaluronic acid will go leaps and bounds to keep your skin happy and healthy!

  • A nice warm bath - *bonus, put your towel in the dryer for a few minutes before you get out.

Baths can be a wonderful place to relieve muscle aches, meditate, relax, and just breathe. I recommend stepping it up a notch with the towel trick or even adding a bath bomb or bath salts for a nice relaxing soak.

  • A hot cup of coffee, tea, or hot cocoa

There is just something magical about holding a hot mug, wearing your favorite sweater, and just staring out into the beautiful winter wonderland outside. Don't have snow? No problem, I'm sure there is still beauty out there! You can also cuddle up next to a fire (or put a fake fire on your TV, they have them on YouTube and Netflix!)

  • Get outside!

Yes, I know, it's cold. But fresh air is good for you, and nothing is better than getting some fresh air and then bundling up inside after. If you have kids, play in the snow with them. If you have a dog, take them for a walk. If nothing else, just step out on the front porch or walk to the mailbox.

  • Bundle up with a good book!

I get the most of my reading for the year during winter. There is just something about bundling up in a blanket and reading by a fire or even in bed. Reading a physical book takes your mind away from other stressors in your day.

I don't know if you've noticed yet or not, but all of these tips can be combined for the perfect winter day. Get outside, then come in and grab your hot drink, and cuddle up with your book. When you are done, finish the night with a nice warm bath and hydrating skincare routine to heal and relax the body and soul!
